Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain and Barcelona head of football Raül Sanllehí met Wednesday morning with Iván Corretja, the agent of Barcelona midfielder Xavi (28).Barcelona, that rejected several offers for Xavi from European top clubs this summer, asked for the meeting that was seen as a first contact regarding a contract renewal (read more here).
Barcelona wants to reward Xavi for his recent performances, especially with the Spanish national team at the European championship last June, and will offer the Catalan player a new and better contract that will link him longer to the club. Xavi's current contract expires in the summer of 2010.
The paper reports that the meeting was held in an excellent atmosphere and that, even when it was just a first informal moment, both parties were already having a very good feeling about being able to close a deal in the future (read more here).
