Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has admitted in an interview with British tabloid The Daily Mail that he needs to renew by next season the contracts of some of his players, among which Arsenal midfielder and Spanish international Cesc Fàbregas (21), or risk them walking out of the club under FIFA rules.When a player under the age of 28 has served three years of his contract he can now buy out the remainder of the value of his deal and leave under Article 17 of the FIFA Transfer Regulations. Cesc will have served three years of his current deal next October and would then be able to move in the transfer window of January 2010 for a transfer fee of around 20 million euro°.
The French coach says that Cesc's contract renewal will not be dealt with until next summer and admits that if the new Arsenal captain does not sign a contract extension in 2009, the club will lose all power to keep him from joining Barcelona:
"We will extend their contracts. Cesc we will do so at the end of the season. January 2010 is a long time away. It may come quickly but it's still a long time. If a player tells you he wants to leave, that he does not want to extend his contract, what can you do? If you say 'No, you don't leave', he can use the Webster ruling and you cannot stop him.
Or you say 'Yes, you can move', but you take advantage of the situation to negotiate a contract with another club. That was basically the situation with Hleb. He told us he wanted to leave but he wanted us to have a transfer fee, so I think he behaved correctly with us. But you have no real power to stop them from moving."
Asked about the constant rumours linking Cesc with a move away from his club (read more here), Wenger said earlier this week at a press conference that he is well aware of Cesc's dedication to Arsenal but that the Catalan midfielder will always be a target for transfer speculation: "I have no doubts about his commitment to the Club. The only problem now is that he has to say every three months he is committed to the Club because of the speculation."
